3.7

A new term for the twisted Edwards group

ISO/IEC 14888-3:2018/Amd 1 · Terms and symbols · added

A term is inserted after 3.6 for the group formed by the points of a complete twisted Edwards curve. It carries a definition and a note that sets out the curve equation, the addition operation and the identity element. Engineers meet the term in 6.13 and in Annex B.

What it asks
Add the term to the glossary with the definition the text gives, and make the design note use the same word for the same object. A note that calls the group an elliptic curve group is not wrong in general, but it will not match the clause an auditor reads.
What the amendment does
Inserts 3.7 after 3.6 in Clause 3. So this is new text rather than a change to wording.
Who it binds
The author of the internal cryptography standard and the engineering glossary.
Evidence an auditor samples
  • The glossary entry, with the term, the definition and the clause citation (cryptography standard)
  • The design note that uses the term consistently for EdDSA (architecture)
  • The code comment or type name that matches the term (source repository)
The test you can run
Search the estate documentation for the term. If it appears only in the standard you bought and nowhere in your own documents, it has not been adopted.
Common failures
  • The term is added to the glossary but the design note still uses the older shorthand.
  • Two documents use the same word for different groups.
How to close it
A new term is only adopted when the code, the design note and the glossary agree. Check all three, and record the review date, because the term is the one an auditor will use to test that the team read the clause. Start with the glossary entry, with the term, the definition and the clause citation and let the row close when it exists with a date and a named holder.
Where it sits against the base standard
The base standard does not carry this text. The amendment adds it, so an estate working from the 2018 edition alone will not find it. The citation has to name the amendment, and the record for 3.7 is the only place a reader can see it.
