ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 · stage 60.00 · under publication

The signature amendment is approved. EdDSA is in.

ISO/IEC 14888-3:2018/Amd 1 adds EdDSA for Ed25519 and Ed448, adds the twisted Edwards curve setting to the general model, narrows the EC-DSA hash list and replaces Annex A. ISO recorded stage 60.00, under publication, on 16 October 2026. This record states what changed, clause by clause, with the evidence an auditor samples.

It binds nobody by itself. It applies to you when a contract, a scheme, a regulator or your own policy points at it. The free check tells you what it would mean if one does.

01 · The public record

Two facts, one date, and an honest boundary.

The amendment closed its final ballot on 15 October 2026. ISO recorded stage 60.00 on 16 October 2026, which is the publication step. The text is settled. The next recorded step is 60.60, the published standard. The facts on this page come from the official ISO record for 89517 and its machine feed.

What is public

  • The designation, title, stage, stage date, committee and ICS
  • The draft amendment instructions, clause by clause
  • The base standard's contents, abstract and introduction
  • The FDIS ballot dates and the page count of the draft

What is not

  • The published text, which is the authority once it exists
  • Any national adoption or transition arrangement
  • An ISO publication date
  • Any legal effect, because the amendment binds nobody by itself

Where the record does not state a thing, this site says so. It does not fill the gap from memory.

02 · Free check

Where you stand before the published text lands.

The check reads six answers against the recorded clauses: your part in signing or verifying, your mechanism inventory, your EdDSA position, whether your verifier rejects malformed input, whether you have checked the hash strength, and your next review date. It returns one of four bands and a dated action list.

Six answers, computed in your browser

Six answers, read against the recorded clause set. Nothing is sent or stored. A blank answer returns scope incomplete, never a pass. The result is a planning reading, not a compliance result.

1. What is your part in signing or verifying?

Leave blank if it is not scheduled. The reading names it as missing rather than guessing.

03 · The record

One page per changed clause and annex.

Every changed clause and annex is one record. Each states what the clause asks, what the amendment does to the base text, who it binds, the evidence an auditor samples, the test you can run, the common failures and how to close it. The 33 records are free and permanent.

Six groups, 33 records. Each links to its section on the record hub.

04 · What changes

One new mechanism, three tightened rules, five annexes.

What the amendment adds

  • EdDSA as a fifteenth mechanism, specified for Ed25519 and Ed448
  • a term for the complete twisted Edwards curve group, and the symbols that go with it
  • a normative reference to the lightweight hash-function part
  • a narrowed hash list for EC-DSA, and a hash strength rule for KCDSA and SDSA
  • a replaced Annex A with object identifiers for Ed25519 and Ed448
  • point encoding and decoding for EdDSA, and worked examples for both parameter sets
  • updated comparison and claimed-feature tables that now include EdDSA

What it does not do

  • a management system standard, and there is no certificate against it
  • a replacement for ISO/IEC 27001 or for your cryptography policy
  • a legal obligation in itself; it binds when a contract, scheme or regulator points at it
  • a reason to re-key an estate; the existing mechanisms stay specified
  • a guarantee that a library is correct; the verifier rules still have to be tested

The amendment closed its final ballot on 15 October 2026 and ISO recorded stage 60.00, under publication, on 16 October 2026. The text is settled; the formal publication is the next recorded step. An estate that signs or verifies has one decision to make now, which is whether EdDSA enters the approved list, and one piece of work to finish, which is the inventory that says which mechanism each system uses and with which parameters.

06 · Questions

What buyers ask first.

What is ISO/IEC 14888-3:2018/Amd 1?

It is Amendment 1 to the fourth edition of the digital signature standard for discrete logarithm based mechanisms. It adds EdDSA, the Edwards curve mechanism, with Ed25519 and Ed448 parameter sets, adds a definition and symbols for the twisted Edwards curve group, narrows the hash list for EC-DSA and tightens the hash strength rule for KCDSA and SDSA, adds a normative reference, and replaces Annex A.

Is the amendment published?

Not yet. ISO records stage 60.00, International Standard under publication, on 16 October 2026. The final ballot closed on 15 October 2026. The text is settled and the formal publication is the next recorded step. The planning date used on this site is 16 February 2027, which is an outer date, not an ISO date.

Does my organisation have to do anything?

Only if a contract, a scheme, a regulator or your own policy points at the standard. The amendment binds nobody by itself. What it changes is the mechanism set an estate may use and the rules a verifier has to implement, so the practical work is an inventory, a decision on EdDSA, and a test of the verifier.

Can we be certified against it?

No. It is a mechanism standard, not a management system standard, and there is no certificate. An organisation is certified to a management system standard such as ISO/IEC 27001, and this amendment informs the cryptography controls and the evidence behind them.

What is the single most important change?

EdDSA. It is a complete new mechanism with its own key generation, signing and verification clauses, two parameter sets, a new term, new symbols and new object identifiers. Everything else is smaller: one reference, one definition, three parameter or hash rules, and four annex updates.

What does the free check do?

It reads six answers about your mechanism inventory, your EdDSA position, your verifier rejection test, your hash strength check and your next review date against the recorded clauses. It returns one of four bands, a dated action list, a plain-text decision record and a share link. It never returns a compliance score.

What is in the USD 799 kit?

All 33 recorded clauses and annexes as a register with an owner, a due date, an evidence pointer and the citation, plus the evidence list and the dated plan, as PDF, CSV and XLSX. One payment, no subscription.

What does the USD 49 a month watch do?

It emails you when the ISO stage, the stage date, the title, the committee or a recorded date changes, and when the record is refreshed after publication. The refresh script diffs the public record against the data file and the email carries the diff. No marketing, and it stops when you cancel.

07 · The rules this is built from

One amendment, cited to the clause, and four markets named.

The 33 records are written from ISO/IEC 14888-3:2018/Amd 1, at stage 60.00 on 16 October 2026. Each record states one amendment instruction in our words, cites the clause it changes and lists the evidence an auditor samples. The 99 evidence artefacts come from the same text.

Read from the real rules, not invented. Check any line against the source link on the page, and read the method at Method. The published text is the authority once it exists, and this record says so on every page.
